2025-26 LHS Winter Sports Preview

Also written by Marisol Gutierrez

For the past few weeks, our winter sports teams have been in full swing at practice and have been getting ready for the upcoming winter season! LHS has six teams that are going to represent us this winter: Boys and Girls Basketball, Unified Basketball, Boys and Girls Wrestling, and Girls Swim and Dive. Here is what the teams have in store for this season:

Boys Basketball

Last year, LHS Boys Basketball ended the season with a 6 – 17 record. One of the things that they focused on last season was trying to build leadership on the team, and a type of brotherhood between the players.

When asked about what the team’s goals are this year, Senior Colin Osher said, “This year we hope to continue that same brotherhood with our new coaching change, and compete at a high level. We also plan as upperclassmen to start a team culture that is inviting and fun, but also competitive and serious for the underclassmen for years to come.”

Girls Basketball

“Last season, we really came together as a team. We had some big wins, improved a lot from start to finish, and built great chemistry on and off the court,” said Senior Emma Bird, when reflecting on what they achieved last year.

In the 2024-25 season, the LHS Girls Basketball team finished the season with a 7-16 record, and kept a lot of the games lost really close.

Their goal this season is to keep improving from last year, playing more as one, staying consistent, and making it to the playoffs.

Unified Basketball

Last season, Unified beat a couple of teams, including Arapahoe! The team fought really hard for all the games, and were able to keep all of them close.

“I guess that we can try a little bit better than last year,” said Chris Goball, when asked what the team wants to accomplish this year.

There is no set schedule for this season yet, so keep an eye out for information in the announcements and the Friday Flyer about upcoming games, and come cheer our Unified squad on!

Boys and Girls Wrestling

Last year, the boys’ team had a great season, and sent two wrestlers to State!

Girls’ Wrestling broke off from a district team last year and showed that they could be successful on their own. The girls’ team, similar to the boys, had members go to State, two of whom placed: Senior Kooper Griggs, who got 3rd place, and Sophomore Wren Freemen, who got 4th. They also had many wins throughout the entire season.

“This year’s goals are to build our program and get more girls out on the team, get more of our team on the podium and at the Ball Arena, have our girls improve in skill, and keep having a good record with our duals,” said Senior Mimi Boone, talking about the goals for this year.

Cheer on both Wrestling teams at home on the following days:

Girls Swim and Dive

Last season, the team won League for the first time in school history! This led to some of the athletes even going to State! The team was really thrilled to make it this far last year, and hopes to do the same again this season.

“This year, we want to win League again, hopefully. We definitely have a good chance, but it is always our goal to make sure that everyone feels welcome and that they are having a good time, and the time improvements are always another bonus,” says senior and team captain Ella Peterson in regards to the team goals this year.
