After being missing for around five months, Tinfoil, one of former science teacher Ms. Benham’s leopard geckos, was captured this morning in the Math Hallway. After going missing last April, rumors circulated that he had either gotten out of his terrarium and met an unfortunate fate, or that a student had somehow taken him home.
Last week, one of our custodial staff reported seeing a gecko running across the floor in math teacher Mr. Prince’s room. The staff member notified our head custodian, Mark, who conspired a plan to catch Tinfoil. Leopard geckos are notorious for being escape artists, and once they are on the loose, it’s almost impossible to catch them. Our caring custodial staff said that they watched many videos on how to catch these lizards before attempting to catch Tinfoil.
This morning, the staff set up the trap to capture Tinfoil in Mr. Prince’s room; a plastic container with some food under it. While waiting for Tinfoil to take the bait, Ms. Bents notified the staff that the lizard was in her room. They quickly moved the trap to Ms. Bents’ room, and one of the custodial staff caught Tinfoil. Tinfoil was picked up after school by Ms. Benham, who is relieved to hear this news.
Science teacher Mrs. Foto kept Tinfoil in her room all day until Ms. Benham could pick him up. Foto has her own pet lizard, and suspects that the reason Tinfoil started coming out of her hiding spot was because he needed water. Over the summer, Tinfoil most likely ate bugs which have good protein and water, sustaining him all summer. We are extremely happy to know that Tinfoil is safe and healthy!
