Recently, I went to a concert featuring several local bands from the South Metro Denver area. It was headlined by Denver-Based punk band, Toxic Authority, at D3 Arts. Opening for Toxic Authority was Hostile Effect, a band that most LHS students either have merchandise for or have seen merchandise for. It’s mostly made up of LHS students.
The band features Luke Nolting as lead singer, Joel Szczesny as drummer, Jake Wilson as guitarist, and non-LHS student Rowan Pearcey as bassist. The band, after only existing for around a year, has grown to playing shows at venues like The Marquis and having over 1000 plays on their one song which had been released only 2 months ago with another single on the way.
I was lucky enough to get an exclusive interview with Hostile Effect’s lead singer. Music that inspires Nolting’s music include obvious inspirations such as bands like Nirvana, Black Sabbath, and Alice In Chains. But he also listed a much smaller band from the early 2000s called Vendetta Red.
But I was curious about a movie that inspired his music. “Almost Famous,” said Nolting. Almost Famous is like my favorite movie.” His love of a film surrounding music and Black Sabbath was clear.
He has now played several venues with Hostile Effect. “For the ones we’ve performed at, Marquis was definitely the most fun,” said Nolting. He also said that Red Rocks was his favorite general concert venue but is yet to play it. Their latest song, Vyvanse, is out now. Make sure to check it out!
