On September 23rd, LHS Spanish classes went to see Destiny of Desire at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Destiny of Desire is a telenovela play written by Karen Zacarías about two girls born in Mexico who are switched at birth by an ex-beauty queen. The telenovela is very fast-paced with so many fun plot twists and elements like dancing and music. Prior to students going to DCPA, a theater teacher came to Littleton to do an improv activity and lesson about telenovelas, which was very fun and informative for students. Understanding culture and identity is a very large portion of the curriculum for all of the MYP, IB, and AP Spanish classes, so being able to have the opportunity to learn about telenovelas, a large piece of culture for Spanish-speaking countries, is very valuable.
Overall, LHS students enjoyed their time at the play, and many were shocked by the plot and outcomes of the story. We were also fortunate enough to ask some of the actors questions after the play about a variety of topics, such as: How do you relate to your character? What were you most excited about when reading through the script for the first time? Why did you audition for your character? And how do you guys do costume changes so quickly? The actors were all very thorough and kind in their responses, but the Q&A was definitely one of the most unique parts of this activity. This is something new that LHS has not done in the past, but it was definitely a fun and unique experience that helps us apply what we learn in class to a new context. We are also very grateful that DCPA made this a unique, accessible activity for schools, and we hope to do it again in the future.
