Littleton Public Schools currently has a 10.6 million dollar budget gap due to a decreasing enrollment of students, and the setbacks from this massive deficit are quite evident. Teachers and their hours are being cut, and it is also why there is no daily trivia with candy rewards in the counseling office! This problem for Littleton will continue to grow unless there’s corrective measures, and one current measure in play is an issue on the upcoming ballot in November. Issue 4A (Mill Levy Override) is meant to fix the deficit and provide further spending for Littleton public schools.
What is 4A and Mill Levy Override?
The Mill Levy Override is a voter approved raise in local property taxes to help fund the education system operating costs. In the case of the Littleton district, if the issue passes on the ballot, it will cost Littleton homeowners 25 dollars for every 100,000 of a property’s market value. So the owners of a house that costs 1 million dollars would have to pay an additional 250 dollars in taxes for Littleton Public Schools.
What Would This Issue Achieve?
4A would add 10 million to Littleton Public Schools budget, and this would achieve multiple benefits as given by Littleton Public Schools:
- Increase teacher pay by 2%, lift temporary wage freeze, attract and retain top tier educators
- Sustain academic excellence and readiness, protect current classroom funding, and maintain existing programs
- Maintaining safe, secure schools and operations
- Cancel the 800,000 dollar furlough day
If this issue passed, many believe it would greatly benefit and uphold the academic integrity of the Littleton school system. If you are a Littleton student or community member who can vote and this Issue aligns with your beliefs, go to your voting booths October 2 to November 3 and vote yes on 4A.
