When most people think about school spirit, they probably visualize pep rallies, spirit weeks, football games, and students wearing their class shirts. Some students see these events as fun but unimportant distractions from academics and other parts of their lives. However, I believe school spirit plays a much bigger role in the high school experience than many students realize.
High school is about more than just grades, test scores, and building the perfect list of extracurriculars. It’s an invaluable experience that sets you up for the rest of your life in your social, professional, and academic future. School spirit helps make this possible. It helps to build friendships, create memories, and create connections with a diverse community. When students come together to support athletic teams, like our girl’s flag football team, attend performances like Rhinoceros, our school play, or participate in our spirit weeks, they share experiences that bring people together across different grade levels and friend groups.
At a school as diverse as Littleton, not everyone has the same interests or experiences. Some students are participating in our illustrious theater and vocal programs while others go out for our athletics programs while still others become members of our academic clubs. School spirit creates opportunities for all students to celebrate what makes our school unique. Attending a game, cheering “P-A-R-T-Y” from the stands, or supporting a production is not about the event itself but about showing support for classmates who have worked hard to represent our school.
School spirit also creates lasting memories. Years after graduation, most people do not remember every quiz, piece of homework, or grade they got. They remember the excitement of a rivalry game, the adrenaline from performing, and the effort that comes from spirit weeks. These experiences help shape what makes high school meaningful.
Of course, school spirit does not require everyone to attend every event or show up in full purple-and-gold. Spirit can be as simple as supporting a friend, following spirit day themes, or showing excitement for the accomplishments of fellow students. Everyone can contribute in their own way.
LHS is more than a building where we attend classes. It is a community and communities grow stronger the more that people participate. School spirit helps create connections, encourages involvement, and makes the high school experience more memorable for everyone.
