One of Littleton High School’s very own writers, freshman Callia Gapter, has gotten picked to present her creative writing stories at the NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) to present her own creative writing story. This is a very big opportunity for her, because she gets to share her amazing story with so many people. “It’s called Endurance of Mother, and I wrote it for my mother for Mother’s Day. It’s about a single mother who has a daughter, and she got pregnant with her daughter from one of her bosses at work, and she debated telling him and decided not to when he moved. In the story, she’s debating with herself if that was the right decision for her daughter,” says Gapter, describing the story she submitted to the organization.
Gapter got really into writing in second grade, whenever the students had to write little stories every night at home. “I started off by writing these stories called Crayon Stories. It would be about the life of a crayon, and I would write their names in the colors. And it’s just progressed from there,” she says. The progression has really shone through because of events like the one she’s attending on Saturday. Though she cannot read the whole story, she gets to share some of the best parts with the people attending.
Callia’s favorite part of writing is creating different characters for the stories she creates. The characters in the pieces can be so different, and endless with variation to their details and design. Gapter says, “What I love most about writing is the characters I get to write in it. I usually write in realistic worlds, but I love the characters and different people I get to include in it.” Every new story gets new characters, so it’s good to be creative with them and explore the possibilities!
Overall, Gapter is going to do great at the convention, and LHS is so proud of her to make it there. Though Callia may be a little nervous, she won’t let that stop her from spreading her work to others. Gapter says, “I just feel very lucky because I know there’s a lot of people who have the ideas, but I’m very lucky that I have the ability to put words to what I come up with in my head. And I’m very grateful for that.”
