French fries are one of America’s most adored, iconic foods, but no restaurant does them quite the same. In a quest to find the best fry, the Lions Roar Now sampled french fries from 5 different fast food places. Each place had their own distinct take on the fry, with different levels of salt, spices, crispiness, and thickness. Here is what we thought of each restaurant, ranked from worst to best.

5. Wendy’s
Wendy’s fries were not objectively bad, but were less salted than McDonald’s and didn’t have a texture that we could fully get behind. Additionally, they used AI in their drive-thru, which felt unnecessary and actually took longer to order with than a human employee. Most of the points that Wendy’s received was from dipping the fries in the classic vanilla Frosty. However, the fry itself was less interesting, giving it a 3 out of 5.

4. Arby’s
Next on our list is Arby’s, where we opted for the curly fry instead of the crinkle cut fry. They were packed full of spices and flavors which are different from the traditional plain fry, which can either be amazing or overwhelming depending on your taste. The curly shape was engaging and fun, and the color was unique. I personally love Arby’s fries and gave it 5 stars, however my fry-tasting companion gave it 3 stars, so we compromised and gave Arby’s a final rating of 4 stars.

3. McDonald’s
It’s difficult to compete with McDonald’s, who has been in the fry game for a very long time. These were the freshest of all of the french fries, and were still hot when we got them. They were perfectly salty, but not too much, and we received them really quickly. They could have been a little bit more crispy and spiced, but that is being highly critical of this amazing fry. As a whole, we rated this fry a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars.

2. Chick-fil-A
Of course we had to go to Chick-fil-A and have their famous waffle fries. The fries had just enough potato skin on them to be tasty, were also extremely fresh, and were served quickly by smiling servers. When dipped in their iconic Chick-fil-A sauce, these fries were tough competitors. The sauce options at Chick-fil-A are certainly the best out of all of these places, making their fry experience more fun and flavorful. However, they weren’t quite as addictive as our final fry, placing them just below with a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars, and tying with McDonald’s.

1. Freddy’s
And last but definitely not least, we finished the day with Freddy’s fries. If you love a thin fry, this place is for you. With a crispy exterior that is not too oily and a soft, melt-in-the-mouth center, Freddy’s won our hearts. The flavoring was not overwhelming for milder flavor palettes, but also not boring. We couldn’t stop eating them with the iconic Freddy’s fry sauce. And now, for the grand reveal… Freddy’s is the winner of our fry review, with 5 out of 5 stars!
