The Black Phone 2: a movie review

An amazing sequel to the first Black Phone movie, The Black Phone 2 arrived in theaters on October 17, 2025. This film is horror movie that takes place in the 1980s in Colorado, and for horror fans looking for a sequel that leans into mood, atmosphere, and some genuinely chilling sequences, Black Phone 2 delivers plenty of reasons to be glad it exists, despite the usual pitfalls that come with follow-ups.

The movie leans into more of a supernatural feel, rather than the original’s tight scope and grounded horror. This sequel pushes the story into new territory, like trauma, survival, supernatural threads, and legacy. The movie does not shy away from gore, scares, and a creepy antagonist.

Although, this film did seem to fall short in some ways. For example, it felt rushed and messy at some points, making it somewhat hard to follow. Also, the shift in tone from the first movie was a big change. The original was a grounded, realistic horror, whereas the second one is more creepy dreams, supernatural aspects, and slasher moments. Some might love this change, but some might hate it.

I think this is an amazing sequel! Horror sequels are notoriously difficult to pull off; many lose the spark of the originals, and sometimes seem to just be a money grab. The Black Phone 2 avoids being simply a carbon copy, but keeps some of the charm of the original. It expands the story, has strong acting, looks great on screen, and has some very scary moments. Horror sequels are usually super disappointing, but this one feels like it has a purpose and solid atmosphere.

If you’re a horror enthusiast, and especially someone who enjoyed the original Black Phone, you’ll likely want to freshen up your popcorn and sit tight for this. It might not be a perfect film, the flaws are evident, but it hits many of the marks that make a horror film worth watching.
