Cadaver Lab With IB Biology

Today, IB Biology students took a very exciting trip to Arapahoe Community College for a guided cadaver lab. A handful of IB juniors and seniors got to go and be involved in this dissection, and it was very educational. We got to learn about the systems of the body, and where the location of all the organs are, from a surreal, hands-on experience. We got to apply the knowledge we all have learned over the past semester in IB Bio, or for the seniors, the past year and a half. This was a very unique experience that not many students get to have, and Arapahoe Community College is one of the few locations in Colorado that offers this.

There are so many benefits of students getting to experience hands-on learning, which allows us to apply everything learned in the classroom, and translate mountains of information into something that is 3D and resonates in your brain further. Many students who participate in IB Bio are interested in going into the medical field, so this was a great opportunity for them to see if the field is something they would like to pursue.

The body dissected today had already undergone a meticulous anatomical dissection back in July, performed by our guide and a few other medical students and professionals. Since then, it has been used for educational purposes like this one. This donated body will be returned back to the University of Colorado (CU) Anschutz Medical Campus, and then will be cremated and returned back to the family.

We are so grateful to this individual for donating their body to science, so that students like us are able to further enhance their education and understanding of human anatomy. This was a truly memorable opportunity!
