Last night at Littleton High School, Thespian Troupe 83 hosted their annual Ice Cream Social. This event presented LHS’ Jazz Band, Marching Band, String Orchestra, and before-school choir, the LHS Singers. The event was in part a promotion for Littleton High’s musical opportunities, and also a promotion for Encore, a non-profit organization which helps fund the school’s theatrical and musical performances. The event was hosted in LHS’ theater, with Thespian officers Thomas Jakub, Emery Burch, Addy Chandler, Reagan O’Connor, and Lauren O’Connor emceeing the show.
The show began at 6:30 PM last night with an introductory statement from our current Thespian officers, who introduced educator Don Emmons with LHS’ Jazz Band, and themselves as the current heads of office. LHS’ Jazz Band started off the night with a cheery number called “Fat N’ Sassy”, a swing beat that blew the socks off of the audience. The amazing performance was highlighted by saxophone solos and Emmons’ wonderful directing, the fun and lighthearted music a great touch to the night.
This lighthearted tone was not lost as the LHS Singers take the stage, directed by Aimee Moran, Lions’ current choir teacher and LHS Singers’ singing coach. The singers continued the trend of fun, bouncy songs by singing “Build Me Up, Buttercup” and “A Sweet Little Thing Called Love”. The singers snapped and swayed while they performed “Build Me Up, Buttercup”, the poppy, fun song not lost on the audience as they moved on to “A Sweet Little Thing Called Love”. The classic song had the audience smiling in recognition, and the amazing harmonizing between the different keys had the audience cheering and clapping by the end.
“I just appreciate being a member of the orchestra” Said Sophomore Thomas Jakub. “The orchestra had to figure out a few extra things just because I have to be both a officer and in the orchestra.”
It seems that the breathtaking performance of “Danse Carnivale” by LHS’ string orchestra didn’t just impact the audience, but the performers as well. Jakub mentions how difficult switching between being a thespian officer and a performer is, but also how the orchestra was very accommodating, and helped Jakub figure the situation out. Jakub and the other Orchestra members performed their rendition of “Danse Carnivale” that night, the whimsical instrumental taking inspiration from songs such as “Can-Can” (Offenbach). Instructor Don Emmons directed the string Orchestra along with LHS’ Jazz band.
The closing act of the social began with Lindsey Gore, Encore’s current volunteer coordinator, speaking on multiple ways that we can help the theater program and shows such as the ice cream social. Signing up for Encore, purchasing items at King Soopers under the account, and supporting shows such as our fall play and spring musical helps Encore fund our productions.
After the attendees had gotten their ice cream from the coolers, the night ended with a beautiful performance by LHS’ Marching band underneath the warm sunset. Overall, the night was a blast for both attendees and performers.
