Have you seen a giant storage container in the parking lot recently? Are you confused about what’s in this container? We were too, but the storage is actually for new lights! This past week, new lights have been installed in the building, replacing the old fluorescent lights that have been at LHS for decades. This started happening in the language arts hall, and the goal is to install new lights in every class in the next couple of weeks. Students may have noticed that the ceiling lights have become extremely bright in their language arts classes, which have definitely resulted in negative feedback and confusion.
So, what’s going on with these new lights?
Although no guidebook was given to the language arts department, they also had a new remote installed on the wall that allows for variation of light colors and vibrancy. This is very fortunate, because for the first few days the lights couldn’t be changed from an extremely bright glare that had students blinded!
Senior Chloe Julien has had trouble focusing with the new lights. “These lights have given me headaches, and this has definitely impacted my learning,” said Julien. Senior Henry Hoffman agrees with this, saying, “They have been really bothering me, and I prefer orange or dimmer lights that aren’t as harsh.”
On the contrary, Language Arts teacher Shelly Russell is very impressed with the new lights so far. “I’m so excited, and I’m all for energy efficiency,” she said. “It should be easier to read with the new ‘READ’ settings, and those old fluorescent bulbs had a constant ringing to them.” Russell loves all of the different settings that come with the remote, and she is looking forward to taking advantage of them.
Once these new lights are installed in all classrooms, it will be interesting to see how the faculty and students react to them as a whole. LHS is a school that’s been around for decades, and it’s great that important updates can happen to enhance the learning experience!
