This fall, LHS put on yet another amazing performance, with the play Rhinoceros. A dark comedy, Rhinoceros has underlying themes that criticize mass conformity and the rise of fascism, set in a small, French town in the 1930s.

The protagonist, an everyman named Bérenger, is played by sophomore Zev Lemire. Bérenger and the townspeople are shocked to see a wild Rhinoceros running through the town, and as the play progresses more Rhinoceroses appear, and people start contracting “Rhinoceritis”. Soon, all of Bérenger’s friends and coworkers have turned into Rhinoceroses, as he himself is questioning his own sanity.
Dramatic, emotional monologues spoken by Lemire and sophomore Connor Bunch (playing the role of Jean, Bérenger’s friend) captivate the audience, along with the intriguing performances by juniors Gabie Prata and Levi Bechtold (Daisy and Dudard, Bérenger’s romantic interest and coworker).
The drama, along with added humor throughout, make this play one that leaves the audience thinking about the symbolism and irony of the story. Additionally, the behind-the-scenes work is very impressive, with quick changes of sets by an entire team of crew members.
Rhinoceros was very well done by LHS Theatre, and it’s one you can’t miss! Show times are Thursday, October 8 at 6:30pm, Friday, October 9 at 6:30pm, and Saturday, October 10 at 1pm and 6pm.
