LHS has welcomed many new teachers this year, one of them being Mr. Robert Shields. He is one of our new social studies teachers, teaching world history, US history, and geography. Along with having experience as a teacher, he also brings an interesting perspective into the classroom from being a lawyer.
Shields has a long teaching background, beginning in 2015. Shields originally became a teacher after he got bored of retirement, and wanted to try something new. He began as a high school teacher in Baltimore, where he discovered his passion for teaching. He later moved to California, where he continued teaching in Compton. When eventually moving to Colorado, he taught middle school in Thornton. Before teaching, Shields was a lawyer. He frequently ties law back to history, emphasizing how important it is for students to analyze different stories from different people.
When asked what brought him to LHS, he replied, “I think it was a blessing…you’re the kind of kids I want to teach because you guys really want to learn.” Shields stated that he has taught in some rough neighborhoods, and he is already impressed with how intelligent and enthusiastic LHS students are.
Outside of the textbooks, Shields loves to play and watch football, rooting for the Baltimore Ravens. He also loves to barbecue, and you can catch him grilling on the weekend. Interestingly, he is also an awesome DJ and music enthusiast. He enjoys artists such as Michael Jackson, Prince, and Sade. Whether it’s his passion for teaching or his awesome DJ skills, LHS is proud to have Shields teaching this year!
