Lions Roar Now reviews The Book of Life

Spooky season is upon us, and thus it’s time to watch some fall movies. As a LHS Lions Roar Now staff, we watched and reviewed The Book of Life. Directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez in 2014, the film was perfect to get into the Autumn season. The film follows a group of characters as they navigate love, in life and in death.

The class average rating was 4.73 out of 5 stars, which truly shows how much we enjoyed this movie.

The general class consensus was a liking towards the unique animation, the strong characterization of the heroes, and the incorporation of Mexican culture.

The animation was interesting and trailblazing, an experimental 3d design full of bright colors that later influenced other films. The characters were doll-like but still maintained the flow of typical Western animation. The heroes themselves were well developed and moving. The pace of the story fit the characters well, and allowed for the audience to connect and see themselves in the various roles. The inclusion of Mexican culture added another dimension to the film as well, a new and different story to be shared along with the given plot.

Overall, a great movie for the fall season! We highly recommend it.
