Michael Estes assumes the role of starting quarterback as a freshman on LHS Football

After several injuries, like first-string quarterback Kai Durica’s broken hand, Freshman Mike Estes has bravely taken the role as starting quarterback for the LHS Football team. Although the team suffered a loss at the Homecoming game, it was clear that Estes has been a key player for the team, and has held his ground despite being a freshman in such a critical role on the team.

It’s very difficult to have the senior quarterback out for the season, but Estes has shouldered this responsibility and has found success on a team that has faced several setbacks due to injury. Luckily, Durica has recovered from his hand injury, allowing for Estes to reflect on his time as the starter.

Estes has played football for four years, so he had previous skill and experience as a quarterback. After hearing that he was now the starting quarterback, Estes felt a range of emotions. “It was definitely nerve-wracking,” he said. “But I was definitely ready.”

Estes faced obstacles because he was a freshman, saying that challenges arose because of his height. “I was able to get through it, but it was hard because I was shorter and smaller than most players,” he said.

The young player is more than ready to continue to be the starting quarterback for the rest of his high school career. When asked about his current goals, he said, “I hope to win, and go to the playoffs!”

“The community and the culture is amazing to me. Everyone is so welcoming and supportive, and there for you when you make a mistake or when you win.” said Estes. “This program is a lot less toxic than others, and it’s something I really love.”

The Lions face Thorton today, October 9, and although Estes isn’t the starting quarterback anymore, he will still be a key contributor to the LHS Football team and their community as a whole.
