Mrs. Neenan is moving to Colombia

LHS math teacher Ilana Neenan has made an exciting choice to teach abroad for the next two years in Cali, Colombia. She will be moving to South America with her family, and is planning on teaching both math and English to students at an international school in Cali. As the 2024-2025 school year wraps up, Neenan reflects on her upcoming travels.

“I have always thought it would be interesting to teach abroad, and so we started looking into how to make that happen.” Neenan said. She had originally wanted to move to Japan after going there and loving the Japanese culture (especially the food!), but she settled on Colombia because the opportunities there are for two-years instead of three years in Japan.

Neenan talks us through the process of finding a place to teach abroad. “We got interviews in South Korea, in Colombia, in Myanmar. And so we just started weighing what experience we wanted to have,” she said.

“I think it’s very useful to be good at Spanish, and that was a big draw for us. For Colombia, we also really liked the cultural aspects compared to some of the other countries. I’m looking forward to just having an adventure, and getting to know a different place,” Neenan says. She is excited for not only the education opportunities but also the food!

“I’m definitely going to miss LHS,” Neenan says as she reflects on her teaching experience here. “I’ve been here my whole career, and I love it.”

We hope she has an amazing time in Colombia, and we will miss her here at LHS.
