With Halloween right around the corner, lots of new scary movies have come to theaters. Here’s a few summaries of our favorites:
M3gan 2.0
One movie that came out over the summer is M3gan 2.0. Sequel to science fiction horror film M3gan that came out in 2022, this movie shows what happened to a doll named M3gan after the first movie. The movie covers a new AI robot named Amelia, who is slowly killing everyone involved in her creation. M3gan comes back through Katie and Gemma’s new AI powered house to bring the warning about Amelia, and Gemma and her friends get together in order to track her down, and find out a crazy secret about Gemma’s new love. Though this is more of an action movie than a horror one, the creepy feeling of the first film shines through to this one. This is no longer in theaters, but it can be streamed on Peacock, YouTube, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies, and Fandango at Home.
The Conjuring: Last Rites
Released in early September, The Conjuring: Last Rites is the finale in The Conjuring universe. The movie follows main characters Ed and Lorraine Warren, and we get to learn more about their daughter, Judy, who has psychic visions. We get to see Ed and Lorraine come out of retirement for one more haunting, and this ending to the thrilling series did not disappoint. Viewers finally get closure to this long franchise of movies, and it will be in theaters until October 9th. In case you miss this movie in theaters, it will be released on digital streaming services on October 7th.
Weapons
Another new movie that came out in August was Weapons. Weapons follows a 3rd grade class of students that all run away at the exact same time, all but one. The whole community is frazzled and confused about what happened to the kids, but the one kid left behind, Alex Lilly, feels the same way about a creepy visitor at his house. Gladys, a supposed witch, puts a spell over his parents, and is the culprit of the creepy occurrences all through the town. This movie is told from many viewpoints of the characters involved with the horrors. Solve the mystery and watch this on YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies, and Fandango at Home.
28 Years Later
This new film is a continuation of the other movies in the series, 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. At this point, it has been nearly thirty years since the viral outbreak that killed almost all of England, and there are a small group of survivors that now inhabit an island, which includes a family of 3. The son and father go into the dark part of the island, where they uncover a secret that affects not only the sickly and infected, but also the survivors. This movie is still in the theaters, but it is also available on Netflix, Apple TV, Google Play Movies, YouTube, Fandango at Home, and Amazon Prime Video.
Him
Coming to Theaters in late September, Him follows a young quarterback named Cam, and his favorite player. We see his favorite player get injured, and follow Cam’s life when he is older and is set to replace him. This movie has humor, horror, and sports. It will continue to be in theaters, and has no set date yet for when it will be released on streaming services.
The Woman in the Yard
Released earlier this year, The Woman in the Yard tells the story of a grieving widow, Ramona, who, following her husband’s death, is haunted by a dark figure in her front yard. As it creeps closer and closer, Ramona realizes she needs to protect her and her kids from this figure who won’t leave them alone. Rated PG-13, this film is great for those who enjoy psychological horror, and is available on Peacock, Prime Video, Apple TV, and YouTube.
Sinners
Sinners follows the tale of twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, who move back to their hometown in Mississippi together in 1932 to open a juke joint, but find themselves confronting a supernatural evil while doing so. Sinners is rated R, and is a wonderful movie for those who like supernatural horror and suspense. It is available on HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+.
There are so many great horror movies to choose from, so check these ones out, along with some other ones that come out soon. Happy streaming…or should I say screaming?
