This past week, the Student Advisory Committee held a meeting where Principal Dr. Velasquez proposed that Littleton High School purchase ping-pong tables to go inside the school.
Last year, the school invested in a foosball table for the cafeteria. It gets some use in the morning and during lunch, but isn’t an incredibly popular attraction. Which brings us to the question: why do we as a school need to put money into unnecessary items that aren’t used very frequently?
Some benefits of having a ping-pong table might include increased movement, as well as a fun activity to do. But on the other hand, it may cause increased traffic in already crowded areas, and ping-pong balls flying across the places like the cafeteria.
However, with our school being originally constructed in 1956, there are many other areas that this money could be put towards, other than games to play in busy areas. For example, our classrooms tend to lack basic supplies like pencils, pencil sharpeners, and working art materials. Some bathroom floors are continuously flooded, and there are a significant number of sinks that don’t work, like in the science classrooms and the bathrooms.
Overall, there are tons of other important things in this school that should be focused on, and I think that those should be the priorities. There also needs to be a greater focus on the student voices and opinions, and these should be taken into account when making decisions like this that directly impact our funding.
