With a new year comes a new season of theater production. This year’s fall play “Rhinoceros” directed by Talia Liccardello has had some new and interesting leads. Sophomore Zev Lemire, in the role of Berenger, has especially stood out in the theater community for his outstanding acting and his quick rise to the spotlight. “Rhinoceros” will show from October 8 through 9, and Lemire will continue to prepare for his role as time goes on.
“I have more lines than I’ve ever had, ” said Lemire about the lead role. “It’s a lot for line memorization.”
It seems that the lead role is a lot more work than many of Lemire’s other roles. This is especially seen in not only the sheer amount of lines that Berenger has, but also how wordy the lines are. It’s easy to get mixed up while memorizing movement, wording, and the lines themselves. Despite how packed the role may be, Lemire keeps a hopeful outlook and an open approach to improvement.
“It was super overwhelming at first,” said Lemire about his role in the play. “It’s gotten a bit easier now.”
Although the role is stressful, Lemire has a lot of fun doing it. He finds a lot of fascination with his role, and with the repeated practice, his confidence is growing as the day grows nearer to the show dates.
“It’s really fun because there are so many different scenes that I’m in,” said Lemire regarding his favorite parts of the role. “I go from this mischievous guy towards this insane and depressed guy, and it’s really cool, this character shift that I go through.”
The new role and responsibility that Lemire has allows for many other opportunities in roles for people of the same age, or even younger than Lemire. Hopefully, LHS’ theater program can show many more students just like Lemire in similar roles in the future.
