LHS community members gather in the South Gym to see projects

Sophomores showcase their personal projects

Today, March 20th, the sophomore class showcased their personal projects in an open house hosted in the North and South gyms. The sophomores have been working on their projects for months leading up to now.

Parents, teachers, and students all gathered to see the projects, ranging from poetry to baking. This project and open house was a great opportunity for students to develop new skills and foster their creativity and to then showcase it for all of the school to see.

A large portion of the projects were in the form of food, ranging from cupcakes and brownies to foods from other cultures. Madeleine McCarty made Papas Rellenas.

“It was a lot of hard work. It took four hours to make, but it was to show appreciation for my culture,” said McCarty.

Moving away from culinary projects, many students chose a form of writing as their project, predominantly poetry. Annie Fox wrote a poem every day for the months of November and December and bound them into a small book. The topics of her poems ranged from flowers and joy to loss and confusion.

“I did encounter writer’s block, but I persevered and used online sources to find different prompts,” said Fox.

Owen Talley learned some of the Farsi language from his Iranian grandfather to write a poem. His poem was about decisions you make throughout your life and how their effects stay with you forever.

“It was hard to learn because of the structure of the language—it’s so different from english,” said Talley.

Autumn Fann collected data from student athletes to put together a tri-fold board about the effects of school athletics on students mental health.

“Mental health is important to me because I’m a student athlete and I’ve struggled with mental health myself. I wanted to spread awareness and figure out how to best help people,” said Fann.

All of the sophomores overcame challenges in the process to create their final product while simultaneously honing new skills and being creative. Each project is a reflection of the students personality and interests. We’ll catch you next year in the gyms for another great open house.
