The Missing Team: A Spotlight on Gymnastics

Gymnastics at Littleton

Gymnastics is a rigorous activity, requiring incredible strength and flexibility. However, it appears that there is a feeling amongst LHS gymnasts that there is very little appreciation or recognition for the students who do gymnastics. Littleton High School doesn’t have its own gymnastics team. Therefore, those who have the passion for it are forced to practice at Active Athletics with a mix of other girls from Arapahoe and Heritage.

This sport is a hard one, filled with difficult routines, and mentally challenging moments that make you feel like you can’t do it. The Lions Roar Now interviewed two of the four girls that do gymnastics as a full time sport, and they explained their sport and the challenges that came with it. Sophomores Taylor Montgomery and Lydia Lawver have both been doing gymnastics since they were between the ages of 4 and 5.

They have been dedicated to the sport for so long, and both greatly wished that Littleton had their own gymnastics team. Montgomery noted how it would be awesome if Littleton had their own team, not only for convenience sake, but also because then more people could join. “It would make the team feel more connected and it would give people at Littleton to have another type of sport to play,” said Lawyer.

Both Montgomery and Lawver participate in the bars and beams routines, “Bars is my ultimate favorite!” said Lawver, when asked about her favorite event to do.

As athletes level up through the ranks of gymnastics, it can become more and more demanding the older you get. It is truly astonishing to see the people who stay with it, and it would be highly beneficial to LHS to encourage this passion and commitment with having our own team. Gaining Gymnastics as an LHS sport recognizes the hard work these athletes do.
