The beginning of 2023 brought many new movies to theaters around the country. One of these new movies is the sci-fi thriller M3GAN which was released on January 6th.
M3GAN is rated as a PG-13 movie for violent content and terror as well as strong language according to the IMDb ratings. After seeing the movie I do agree with their opinions. While the violence in the movie is present it’s not the most prominent part of the story.
The movie is about a young girl, Cadey, who loses her parents in an accident and goes to live with her Aunt Gemma who works for a toy manufacturer. In an effort to save her job, Gemma creates an android robot, M3GAN, that will be friends with children. M3GAN’s primary goal is to protect Cadey from physical and emotional harm. Throughout the story, M3GAN slowly begins to gain more control over her human counterparts.
There have been many movies in the past about robots gaining power over the humans that created them. However, this film is different because M3GAN is meant to protect Cadey, as that is how she was programmed. M3GAN’s complete takeover of her programming was expected, however I didn’t expect the complete change she had when she rejected everything she was originally taught.
In regards to the acting, I thought some actors performed their characters better than others did. Violet McGraw played one of the leading roles, Cadey. She did a very good job of emulating the grieving child, however towards the end I started to find her child voice slightly annoying. On the other hand, Amie Donald played M3GAN perfectly. She wore a plastic mask which gave her a more doll-like face. She also learned to move around in a very robotic manner which at times sent chills down my spine.
Overall, M3GAN is a very good movie for people who are comfortable with dolls and some violence and are excited for a new telling of the robots becoming too big a part of our lives to the point that it becomes dangerous.
