Understanding SNAP Benefit Reductions: Why they’re happening and what you can do

On November 1st, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program beneficiaries, best known as SNAP Benefits, a former right to 42 million Americans, were taken away because of the current government shutdown. The shutdown of SNAP happened the day after Trump held his “Gatsby” themed party. The government shutdown happened on October 1st, 2025 because of partisan disagreements over federal spending levels and health insurance subsidies. The shutdown is already the longest government shutdown, with almost 40 days, followed by another one of Trump’s shutdowns of 35 days in 2018-19. Trump’s administration is still in the process of reaching a resolution.

On November 6, 2025, a federal judge, McConnell, mandated the administration to cover federal food assistance by November 7th fully. The Federal judge said this when Trump’s administration decided to partially fund SNAP benefits by using funds from the Department of Agriculture. The administration has now decided to pay 65% of SNAP with 4.6 billion dollars, although it will take many weeks to deliver partial payments.

SNAP Benefits feed over 40 million Americans, including kids, people with disabilities, and veterans. These benefits are needed daily for millions of Americans. Many Children and parents will not be able to eat full meals or pay bills fully during the month of Thanksgiving due to SNAP benefits, a right being taken away.
