Unwanted Halloween Candy: What are we to do?

Whether it’s gained through trick-or-treating or through passing out candy, every house has extra, oftentimes unwanted, candy gained from Halloween. Hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of pounds worth of Halloween candy are thrown out every year. What is done with the candy depends upon each person, but if you need recommendations, here are some to reduce waste:

1. Give it to friends

First of all, you could give your unwanted Halloween candy to friends and family. This a preferred option for many LHS students. Several students admit to giving their unwanted candy to younger siblings or neighborhood friends, while others say that they prefer to profit off of their Halloween spoils, exchanging it for money from their parents. Some also trade with their friends, choosing sweet over sour flavors or vice versa.

    2. Donate your candy

Another option is to donate locally, or to American soldiers. There are various places and programs in which candy can be donated to people who would appreciate it. A little bit goes a long way, and one piece of candy may not seem like a lot to us, but it could mean the world to someone else.

    3. Just eat it!

If neither of these options are quite right, there’s always the obvious: just eat it yourself! Candy is a wonderful way to motivate yourself after a test, or before a sports practice.

Halloween happens once a year, so let’s make the best of this wonderful holiday and minimize our waste.
