On Sunday, February 22nd, LHS senior Victoria Chang-Nunley competed against 15 other students in the 42nd annual Shakespeare Competition. The English-Speaking Union has branches all across the United States, including Denver. 2 students from each school were able to compete, and LHS was proudly represented by Chang-Nunley and senior Emmett Moxon, sponsored by Ms. Millicent Ambroggio.
Victoria took home the coveted position of 1st place, winning an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City.
“I’m super excited. I’ve never been to New York before, and it’s paid for, and I get to bring a parent and a teacher. We’re gonna get to see a Broadway show, which is so cool,” said Chang-Nunley, excitedly.
To win this trip, each actor performed a monologue and a sonnet by William Shakespeare. Victoria’s selection was Helena’s Monologue, a dramatic piece from All’s Well That Ends Well, in addition to the comedic Sonnet 2.
“It was super neat because everyone was doing very drastically different stuff; there were dramatic and comedic things.” she noted.
The competition was set in a black box theatre, with chairs encircling the performing area. There was no set or costumes or anything, simply the performers, their characters, and talent that each brought with them.
The English-Speaking Union is helping to keep art and traditions alive, nurturing the talent of young people in the process. Check out the official website at esuus.org for more information about the competition and their other programs!
