On Thursday, August 26th, the girls’ volleyball team had their first game of the season against Denver North, and after a tough fight, lost in three sets.

Going into the season, the volleyball team had played scrimmages against other teams and had lots of practice, but the first-game nerves seem to have affected their play.

“I think we started off rough, I think a lot of people were really timid and we weren’t playing our best, but I think towards the end we really picked it up and showed what we have to show,” said senior captain Malea Jones.

Although they began the game with a lot of energy, nerves came out in the form of double hits and net violations. This widened the gap between North’s score and the Lions, making it difficult for the girls to keep up.

By the middle of the game, the energy sagged but during the third set the girls kept fighting and brought up the energy. They kept the score extremely close all the way until the bitter end of the third set and showed LHS what they have to offer for the rest of the season.

“By the end we picked it up, we got our passes, we were communicating, but in the beginning and especially the middle we were dead silent and that’s really what brought our play down,” said senior Mallory Coughlin.

Even though the girls lost the first game, they are hopeful after the last set for what the rest of the season has to offer and will keep working to win games, especially when it comes time for the League games.

“As long as we can get it together, we will have a very good season. We just have to communicate and work on getting good passes, and good sets, and good hits,” said Coughlin.

The next home volleyball game is August 31st at 6:30 PM against Lincoln.
