If you’ve never been to a Denver University (DU) sports game, you’ll be missing out on one of the most exciting and interactive experiences in the city.
Recently, I attended a Pios volleyball match, and the energy inside the gymnasium was contagious; the crowd roared and cheered with every point, music blasted through the room, and the players’ intensity made you want to jump out of your seat and get on the court with them.

DU doesn’t just offer volleyball: it also has 18 leading varsity programs in men’s basketball, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, soccer, swimming & diving, and tennis, as well as women’s basketball, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, skiing, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, volleyball, and triathlon.
Denver Athletics are proud winners of 35 NCAA national championships, along with 130 individual national championships. The department also boasts 582 All-Americans, more than 1,773 All-Conference award winners and 71 Academic All-Americans. This success and competitiveness promises a fun event to all who attend.
DU isn’t just another far-away college to be thought about only during the stressful throes of senior year; it’s a part of our extended community. A lot of high school athletes dream of playing the sport that they love at a collegiate level and watching DU’s team in action gives us a glimpse of what that looks like. Their dedication, talent, effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship are the same values that are celebrated here at LHS. It’s inspiring to see how the effort that we put in now can evolve into professional excellence.
Supporting local college athletics helps strengthen the connection between high school and university life. By getting familiar with the vibe and culture of a college campus, the move to life after high school will be less jarring for students. Plus, it helps students figure out what kind of campus they want to attend: do they like big or small schools? Do they want to live in a college town, a busy city, or somewhere more rural?
Whether you’re an athlete, a fan, or just looking for something to do after school, DU events are a perfect way to celebrate the spirit of Denver sports and get inspired for both the future and LHS’ own courts and fields.
