Ms. Hangyan Chen is one of the many new teachers starting at Littleton High School this year. The latest addition to the science department, Chen is eager to share a love of science with her new students. The Lions Roar Now was able to get an interview with her in order to discuss her feelings on her subject and gain more information about future labs and projects this year.
Chen’s favorite part of science is physics because she majored in it after years of work. “I think I’m enjoying working on these problems, and also figuring out how to apply physics into our daily life,” said Chen.
She discussed favoring teaching at the start of the year, “I come into the classroom and when the students are coming in, we can refresh,” she said.
Given Chen started teaching last year, she was asked about how she felt about joining the LHS community. “Excited. My colleagues are supportive and the students here are amazing. We respect each other and we work together.”
Chen has several labs planned to help engage students with their work and what they’re learning. Due to this, she was asked which of the upcoming labs was her favorite. “I plan a lot, but I think my favorite would be the one with the water gun,” said Chen.
Currently, her Integrated Science II students have to make their own Scale Models of something of their choice. One of the ways she wants to make science enjoyable for students is balancing more projects and labs along with the quizzes and studying.
To end the interview, she discussed her opinion of the project. “First of all, I think the Scale Model project is an interesting one. Very engaging,” she said. “But on the other hand, I feel it’s a hard project.” Ms. Chen acknowledges the challenge of the project, pushing students further in her classes.
