On Monday, September 14, LHS and Abraham Lincoln High School faced off in an intense varsity match resulting in a draw.
The intense fight between the two schools had a strong start. The two teams were bouncing free kicks, offside balls, and the audiences’ attention between each other. After what felt like ages of continuous back-and-forth, senior Andrey Polita scored the first goal for the Lions.
“It was pretty exciting,” said Polita in reference to the outstanding goal. “I mean, it’s my second goal to play for on this season.”
As the game continued on, the plays only got more intense. After a strong shot at goal by the Lancers, there were some wild offside balls, one even going into the slightly wooded area behind the field.
Along with the intense shots, there were many free kicks, goal kicks, and even some yellow cards against each team. The audience was at the edge of their seats as kicks and close shots were traded from one to another. This sentiment is shared by goalkeeper, junior Owen Peereboom, who was waiting on the sidelines with bated breath.
“It had me on the edge of my seat, because, like, it was really intense,” said Peereboom about the match.
In the end, the Lancers scored the last goal of the game. During the last stretch of the match, both teams endlessly competed for the winning goal, but their efforts were not achieved. As the final seconds count down, both Polita and Peereboom are left reflecting on the event.
“We could have won that, but we’re going to learn from that and play better in the next game.” Polita said, a hopeful outlook on the match.
While Polita reflected on what the team could do next game, Peereboom reflected on what the Lions could improve on from that night.
“I feel like the best thing I’ve seen so far has been plays,” said Peereboom, thinking about what his team had done right during this fierce game.
Peereboom also reflected on how the team is willing to learn from the mistakes that they made tonight, and improve them for the next match.
The game ends on a hopeful tone, and overall a good match between the two rival schools. LHS varsity soccer’s next home game will be on September 22 at 6:30 pm against Evergreen High.
