Last Saturday morning, our Varsity boy’s baseball team stepped onto the field for a home game against Standley Lake High School. After a recent win, spirits were high among our players, eager to keep the momentum going. Despite the sunny skies and supportive crowd, both teams knew the game ahead would be challenging. As the first pitch was thrown, the stage was set for an afternoon of intense competition and focused play.
Heading into this game, LHS started the game as the defense with determination. Reilly Reddy (12) emerged as a critical player to watch, boasting 18 stolen bases, placing him just two steals away from breaking our school’s record.
Evan Siler (11) took the mound for the first 4.2 innings, holding Standley Lake to just 4 runs. His precise throws and strategic gameplay kept the opposing batters on their toes, showcasing his value to the team’s defensive strategy. Following Siler’s strong start, Peyton Brooks (11) stepped in for him and pitched for the next 3.1 innings, maintaining composure under pressure and helping to keep our team in the lead. Meanwhile, Ty Tholen (12) anchored the defense as a catcher, making 10 crucial outs throughout the game. His consistent performance behind the plate prevented Standley Lake from gaining an advantage.
Standley Lake took an early lead in the opening inning, scoring 3 runs to our team’s 2 runs. However, our team’s resilience and determination shone through as Siler and his teammates tightened their defense, preventing Standley Lake from extending their lead. By the end of the third inning, our team had rallied, scoring 3 more runs to take a 5-3 lead.
Despite our efforts, Standley Lake fought back in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a close play at home plate to narrow the gap to 5-4. They continued their offensive push, adding 2 more runs in the same innings. The pitching change from Siler to Brooks brought a fresh perspective, but Standley Lake scored 3 more runs in the following innings, tying the game at 7-7. Tension mounted as the game entered the eighth inning, with Standley Lake breaking the tie with a crucial run, putting pressure on our team. Despite our best efforts, we could not score in the bottom of the eighth, resulting in a heartbreaking 8-7 defeat for our team.
Even though LHS lost, our team had standout moments, particularly for Reddy, who achieved a remarkable milestone by reaching a record-breaking 20 stolen bases. This accomplishment not only highlights Reddy’s skill but also reflects the collective effort and determination of the entire team.
The atmosphere in the crowd was supportive throughout the game, with both team’s families showing unwavering support for both teams. From spirited chants to the heartwarming rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” sung by players’ younger siblings and relatives, at the end of the fifth inning, the sense of community and togetherness was evident.
Despite the outcome, Saturday’s game showcased the grit and determination of our Varsity boy’s baseball team. From the intense plays on the field to the lively backing from their families and friends, it was a game filled with action and excitement.
