Recently at the Lions Roar Now, we received a scrapbook from the family of former student Martha Dametz, who graduated from LHS in 1949. Her family explained that it was her dream, after she passed, to have the scrapbook returned to LHS.
Inside the scrapbook, there’s a wide variety of memorabilia from LHS in the 1940s- and, notably, a lot of articles from the Littleton Independent newspaper and the Lions Roar Now.
Moreover, after a bit of digging, we discovered that Dametz was actually a reporter for the Lions Roar Now.
Digging through the scrapbook proved to be a very interesting experience, since LHS has changed greatly since 1949. One of the first things that we noticed was a list of 24 comedically morbid school chants to be used at sporting events, all of which have vanished as time progressed, and likely for good reason.
At one point, we also had a “Lions’ Bible”- a student handbook containing information about LHS, its history, clubs and activities, and code of conduct, to name just a few.
Along with that, much of the articles in the scrapbook are sports-related articles, showing both the age of LHS and how much it’s changed since 1949. Football was particularly highlighted for their large team, consistent victories, and their members’ ability to coordinate well with each other.
Interestingly enough, many of these sports articles weren’t written by the Lions Roar Now- instead, they were written most notably by a Mason Brown, who was a writer for “The Annual”, meaning that at one point, LHS might have had two school newspapers operating independently from each other.
Needless to say, we at the Lions Roar Now had a lot of fun looking through the scrapbook, seeing the history of our high school, and realizing how much LHS has changed.
