Directed by Jacob Chase and released on August 21, the sixth film of the Insidious series stars Amelia Eve (Gemma Hall) and Lin Shaye (Elise Rainier). Gemma is a young mother, raising her daughter in her childhood home. She discovers she has a supernatural power to travel between two worlds and with this discovery finds that something is hunting her down. So was this movie a hit or miss?
Insidious: Out of the Further is the newest addition to the Insidious franchise, bringing audiences back into the supernatural world the series is known for. Going into the movie I expected it to be scary, but I found it more suspenseful than frightening. There were several moments that had my heart racing and kept me wondering what would happen next, even though I wouldn’t say the movie actually scared me.
The story was one of the stronger parts of the movie. It was interesting enough to keep me invested, and I did enjoy seeing how everything came together. However, I felt like the movie didn’t add anything to the franchise as a whole. It works as another story within the series, and it didn’t leave me feeling like the franchise had changed or expanded in a significant way.
The acting was a weak part for me. Throughout the entire series it has felt very cringey and that continues in Out of the Further. There are moments in each movie where it is difficult to take the scenes seriously. While this didn’t completely ruin the movie it did take away from intense moments and it makes the franchise feel cheap.
One of my favorite moments from the movie was the end. It happens to answer a lingering question I had from the first movie. I thought that the full circle moment was a great detail for longtime fans and it makes the movie feel more connected to the franchise’s beginnings rather than being completely separated from where it came from.
Overall, I liked the movie, even though I didn’t think it was the scariest of the series. It succeeds more as a suspenseful rather than a terrifying movie. Still the story kept me interested, and the connections to the original made it worth watching. For insidious fans old and new, I think it’s worth seeing, especially if they enjoy suspense and the supernatural elements that make the franchise popular.
