School has officially begun, and with it comes the buzzing excitement and curiosity of a very new LHS administration. Now that LHS has been up and running for almost 2 weeks, Dr. Wendy Rubin shares her thoughts, joys, and future hopes with the Lions Roar Now.
“My favorite part of the first week of school was just getting to see kids in the hallways and feeling that really excited energy that people had coming back together,” said Rubin as she talked about how the school felt empty without students. From Seniors with their overalls to nervous Freshman, Rubin loves seeing every one of us. “Having the kids here in the school just makes my heart so happy because schools feel alive when the kids are in them.”
With all of the fun traditions and school spirit, there is no place quite like high school, and our new Principal certainly agrees. After being a superintendent at Englewood Schools for 8 years, she decided to return to high school.
“I would always tell people, you know, before I retire, I want to be a high school principal again. I really love the energy of high school,” said Rubin. “I think high school students are just so creative, clever, funny, and really caring about the world and your place in it.”
Because she cherishes students so much, Rubin intentionally does a few things around the school to create a welcoming environment. “I really try as much as possible to be out in front of this school in the morning and tell people, ‘Welcome, glad you’re here,’” she said. “I’m happy to see you, and I’m happy we are here together.”
In addition to holding the front doors in the mornings, she does something else that is a little bit more unconventional. “Something else I do that is so funny I picked up from a mentor of mine. I like to push the garbage can around the cafeteria because it gives me a minute to chat with people.” It also enables her to see who is alone or who doesn’t have food, and gives her an opportunity to make a small but impactful difference in LHS while she is on lunch duty.
“I like to connect kids if they need to be connected with. I like to be able to model that idea that, you know, just because it’s not my mess doesn’t mean I’m not going to help clean it up,” said Rubin. “If I expect somebody else to do it, I have to also be willing to do it myself, right?”
When asked about what she is most looking forward to this year, Rubin had a few thoughts. “I’m just really looking forward to all the firsts. I’m also looking forward to going to things, whether it’s performances or seeing the learning.”
Additionally, she is excited to be a support for students as well as a building administrator. “I love being a person who can hopefully help you as a student who is growing and learning and has your whole life ahead of you,” said Rubin. “Hopefully, I can help lighten the load, or do things that make you feel like, ‘Wow, you know what? Today I’m going to have a really good day as a student here at LHS.’ That’s why I’m here, for the kids and the energy and the positivity.”
If you have any questions for Principal Rubin, or just want to stop by and have a conversation, her doors are wide open.
