Boys swimming dominates at first meet after spring break

On April 4th, 2023 the LHS boys swim team had a meet against D’Evelyn High School, Pomona High School, and Evergreen High School. The team placed second at this week’s meet and the boys have many things to say about it.

Max Ratcliff, a junior on the varsity team, said that he “had a lot of really exciting relay splits while swimming in the meet.”

Senior swimmer Lars Romine has been swimming for thirteen years and has been on the Lions swim team since his freshman year. He has a very interesting outlook on the meet.

“I think it was maybe a little bit rocker than some of our other meets, but it’s also kind of like I think we’re in sort of a juncture of the season where—you know, coming right off of spring break.”

Swimmers compete in the 50-yard freestyle

However, he does think that meets after a long break do not accurately represent how well the team can typically perform.

The boys have big goals for the rest of the season. Swimmers always want to beat their personal best in their events. Romine wants to help his team win another league championship. He thinks the team is well on its way there this year.

Romine says the team goal “is just to have a well-bonded team and have good chemistry.”

Ratcliff’s favorite part of the team is “the team bonding and the shared experiences we have during practices”

“I think this is a really special team,” says Romine. “I’ve been on a lot of teams with a lot of really good swimmers. But I think this year we have like—I feel like in years prior we’ve had some really good top-end swimmers but I feel like it hasn’t maybe traveled throughout. But I think this year we have a lot of like—everybody’s like all pretty much on the same level, and is all willing to work really hard, so we’re all in a good spot to contend for a championship.”

Boys swimming has an invitational meet at Cheyenne High School this weekend against fifteen other schools. Go cheer them on!
