Breaking: girls basketball wins first playoff game

The girls basketball team hosted a home playoff game on February 21st against Greeley Central. They had a hard-fought defensive battle and came away with a 44-32 win. This had been a long time coming following the disappointing first-round exit last season.

“They were a good team,” said junior Penny Urquhart. “We kind of struggled in the first half, but then we came through.”

Urquhart, a shooting guard and point guard who is ranked 10th in the state for player assists per game and 19th for 3-point scores made, helped lead the team to victory by knocking down multiple three-pointers and bringing a large defensive presence.

The team also fought through adversity with a couple of calls not going their way and junior Daysha Sagrillo-Smiley fouling out.

Sagrillo-Smiley, a power forward and center, had a field goal percentage of 100% for this game.

“We don’t think Daysha should have fouled out, two of the calls weren’t really fouls, but in the end we won, we’re good, next round!” said Urquhart.

Notably, senior Dalana Jakovljevic, a center, scored 14 points during this game, earning her the title of Player of the Game.

The team now moves on to play the winner of the Air Academy vs Thompson Valley playoff. Show up and show out to watch our varsity girls basketball team as they compete in their next playoff game on Friday, February 24th at the Air Academy.
