First season of inaugural girls flag football team starts this week

Exciting news for flag football players, LHS has partnered with the Denver Broncos and Nike to create a girl’s flag football team, whose first season is starting this week and continuing into October.

Coach Jamie Mathews, a health and physical education teacher here at LHS, who has lots of experience coaching football, is coaching the new team. The first practices are taking place this week and Coach Mathews encourages anyone who’s interested to come out.

So who can join the team?

“Anybody and everybody like any of our female participating students whether or they’re in a fall sport whether they’re not in a fall sport that wants to commit to it. Anyone’s invited to come join us. I’m excited, we’ve had 22 girls that have had interest so far and that’s a lot, but we’ll take as many as we can get,” said Coach Mathews.

How do you join?

“All you have to do is you register, and from that point, you just have to have a valid physical like you would have to for any other sport. As soon as we get that you’re good to go, and anyone can be involved,” said Mathews.

Three different school districts are participating in this new flag football league, including several Cherry Creek schools, various DPS schools, and the Jeffco league of which LHS is a part.

Littleton isn’t the only school recently introducing flag football, schools everywhere have begun to show interest in the sport.

“Around the country, there’s been this wave of moving towards flag football and having the option for girls to participate and play because traditionally, it’s been a guy’s sport,” said Coach Mathews.

The move for more inclusive athletics will further diversify the activities offered at Littleton.
