Girls basketball season comes to a close after tough loss against Durango

On Friday night, the girls basketball team suffered an extremely close loss of 34-40 against Durango after being ahead for the first half. After making the playoffs and coming off of a bye, the girls’ seasons have come to an end, and although it is over, it certainly was a season to remember.

“There was a little bit of nerves and we tried to get past that but, you know, it’s just one of those things, that’s how it goes,” said senior captain Marlee Hernandez-Priest.

Going into this playoff game, their overall record was 16-5.

“Marlee’s not coming back and she’s our captain, it doesn’t feel good to lose,” said sophomore Penny Urquhart.

In the first half the Lions were ahead with scores of 11-9 and 18-12. Throughout the entire game, both teams’ defense were on par. However, in the second half the Lions fell behind with a score of 27-30 before a final score of 34-40. It was clear that both teams wanted to win extremely badly, and while the Lions played well, rebounds and missed shots began to add up, leading to their loss.

There was also a huge student section that were cheering on the girls the entire game, all dressed in white for the white-out theme.

“Obviously we didn’t hit our shots and they did and that’s why we lost,” said Urquhart.

Along with Urquhart and Hernandez-Priest, junior Dalana Jakovljevic and sophomore Jacy Chandler played well.

“I know that the team will carry on what we’ve all been doing and keep up everything,” said Hernandez-Priest.  This game marks the end of the 2021-2022 season for the Lady Lions, but in future years we can expect lots from this program and the passion they have for the game.
