“Growing Pains” – an exhibition by IB Studio Art

Go West on Powers and nestled in a corner is Littleton’s Depot Art Gallery where, starting March 21st and going to March 31st, LHS’s IB & Studio Art class is presenting their work.

The pieces range in size and medium from oil paint to mixed media. 13 artists are presenting their work, unified by the theme — the gallery’s title — “growing pains.” Many pieces are for sale and the display is an excellent showcase of student capabilities.

Milo Wedding (12) is displaying both acrylic paintings and a series of masks he decorated.

This mask (left, called Dicere) is a part of a series based off the concept “hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil,” this one specifically showing speak no evil, thus covering the mouth.

“A big theme… for my work is doing hard things, and perseverance, and struggle,” says Van Owen (12). “Once you can manage your emotions and discipline yourself to do what you need to do, then you make your life a lot less painful.”

Zil Torres (12)’s set of paintings (below) is known as the Eminence of the End. “It is a piece about my own struggles with inevitability,” Torres says. “I picked orange because orange is both the color of courage but also cowardice, and I thought it was relevant to such pieces, of the deaths of the minds, of the bodies, of the things that we build, and the things that we make.”

Djuna Strahl (12) wanted to combat negative energy in the world by creating pieces with peaceful energy, and plays with proportions to create a unique style which unifies all her pieces. She uses acrylic on canvas.

In the corner, Silas Beranek (12) displays works in charcoal. In this piece, she celebrates a former art teacher with this portrait, titled Inspiration.

The IB Studio art class is required to organize a gallery as part of their IB exam, and has taken place at this location for the last 10 years thanks to the Littleton Fine Arts Guild’s support.

The exhibition is limited time, and sales are already being made. The gallery has even more excellent work not shown here, and is guaranteed to move you should you visit. This is not an event anyone should miss.
