Lady Lionfish compete in league and qualify for state

Over last weekend, LHS girls swimming had several people qualify for state competition. The Lionfish had a great run this year and has had some great growth over the season. All of the state qualifiers are excited to carry on the LHS legacy during state competition.

Junior Gabi Leonard qualified for backstroke, senior Josie Schell and junior Caley Brungardt qualified for 100 butterfly, junior Kate Loving qualified for 100 free, and sophomore Sam Denman in 100 and 50 free. Senior Scarlett Montoya, freshman Ella Peterson, and junior Scout Hawkins all qualified for breaststroke. The team is really proud of what they have been able to accomplish over the past season.

One of the qualifiers and one of the most avid swimmers on the team, Scout Hawkins, has been dedicated to swimming for almost 10 years now (3 years for LHS) and is still going strong.

“I’m expecting state to go super well! I think my competitors and I have been working super hard and are fully prepared to race our hardest and drop incredible times,” said Hawkins.

Hawkins also says that the team has grown strong with their underclassmen numbers too.

“We have a healthy amount of speedy freshmen and sophomores.”

Another qualifier, Gabi Leonard, is also eager to swim at state finals. Leonard has been on the team for 3 years as well. This is her first time making state and she is looking forward to swimming in individual and relay races for the first time.

“The team has always been so supportive of everyone and always super positive. We are all very close and it’s a fun community to be a part of,” said Leonard.

With the dedication of the underclassmen, as well as the whole community, the team has high hopes for the future and is looking forward to a great end to the season, as well as next season.
