LHS poms team competes at the state competition

This past Saturday the LHS Poms team competed at state. The event took place at the Denver Coliseum, and our team performed at around 2:30 in the afternoon. Our Poms team has been to state many times in the past. Head coach Mrs. Koepke said the team has probably been going to state every year since the mid 1990’s. In her time at Littleton the team has competed many times, and this time around the competition was fierce.

Our team came in 15th place, and due to the close competition, that is a huge achievement. The grading was very close and very competitive. Our team was one point away from being in the top 10 in the state, and less than 4 points separated us from the top 5 teams.

The team danced to an 80s mix and gave it their all. Djuna Strahl, one of the team captains, mentioned how,

“The whole team showed growth and amazing talent”, and everyone on the team is proud of their growth throughout the season.

LHS Poms with some Broncos Cheerleaders before they perform at state

One of the highlights of the day was meeting some of the cheerleaders from the Denver Broncos. The cheerleaders met with our team before they performed to wish them good luck and share some words of encouragement. This meant a lot to the girls on our team and they appreciated hearing from some people that they look up to.

I asked some of the dancers what their favorite parts about being on the team was and in the responses you can truly tell how much the girls love what they do. Carolina Avina, a sophomore who’s in her second year on the team said,

“It’s really fun to be around people that you love and people that you can be yourself around.”

Djuna Strahl said that she loves getting ready in the locker room and really cherishes the little moments with the team.

It’s obvious that every member of the team honestly loves what they do, and that makes it even more special that they were able to do so outstanding at state this year. Well done girls!
