Meet the Asian Youth Leadership Association

Asian Youth Leadership Association (formerly AAPI club) was founded last year by senior Emma Weishaupl.  This year, Weishaupl is the President, and her goal is to bring more representation to the Asian community in the school.

The club focuses on service and creating a safe place for anyone in the school. It is very inclusive space and everyone is welcome to attend the meetings.

“This club is like an alliance for Asian people in our school and everybody else,” said Weishaupl when asked about the Asian Youth Leadership Association.

AYLA mainly focuses on community service and trying to create a more inclusive place in the school. There are going to be many service projects throughout the year, which give you hours for IB.

“People who are in IB should come and talk to me or join us.” Weishaupl advises.

“Not everybody here is Asian, obviously,” said Weishaupl, “It started up last year because we wanted to actually have a community of Asian people.”

During the meeting on September 21st, the club was planning their newest community service project.  “This year we are specifically focusing on A, having a good time, and B, also working on community service projects.” AYLA is planning to pick up litter to help the community, and thinking about doing a food drive as well.

“Right now, we’re focusing on also getting more people. We’ve got snacks to attract people,”  Weishaupl said in an effort to get people interested.

Asian Youth Leadership Association is hosted in Ms. Chen’s room multiple days a month. The meeting times are 3:45 on the first Thursday of every month, and 7:45 on the third.

It is really important to Weishaupl that everyone at our school feels at home. She feels the Asian community is really underrepresented, and “wants to meet more Asian people in our school.”

The Asian Youth Leadership club is a great place to be no matter if you are Asian or not. The club welcomes everyone, and can’t wait to start their newest service project. If you are in IB or considering joining the club, talk to Emma Weishaupl or follow @littleton_ayla on Instagram.
