What is the Giving Snowman?

What are the origins of the Giving Snowman? It started with a family of a student of former social studies teacher Mrs. Kathy Prestel.

When asked what the origins of the giving snowman were this is what Mrs. Prestel had to say.

¨Giving Snowman started probably 10 years ago because the orphans at the Musana Orphanage. It was only an orphanage and school. 10 years ago they did not have a lot of gifts cause they didn’t have any families so our student council that year decided to put up the giving snowman and have kids here at Littleton get them Christmas gifts.¨

When asked what the connection she had with the Musana orphanage is Mrs. Pretsel had this to say.

¨Well one of my students started it. I coached her in basketball and volleyball for four years her sister who I had in IB World History class. I got to be close friends with their family and so when they went to Musana to start this and when they came back they needed help to fundraise. Since I was the head of the student council at that time, this was 2008, I said we’ll help you fundraise and we did some fundraisers for them. And then in 2009, I went to Uganda and helped them set up a curriculum for their school and hired teachers. Then I went back the next year in 2010 and trained their teachers on up to date styles of teaching and I’ve gone back every 2 years since then to help coordinate and kind of be a consultant.¨

The Giving Snowman is up every year for students at LHS to give presents to kids in need at the Musana Orphanage. The fundraiser is over for this year but remember it for the next. Help give kids a good holiday!
