Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is a Puerto Rican singer, rapper, and songwriter known for revolutionizing Latin music. He first gained fame in the late 2010s, with hits like Soy Peor and I Like It (with Cardi B and J Balvin).
His music blends reggaeton, Latin trap, and other genres, breaking language and cultural barriers in order to become one of the most-streamed artists in the world. Beyond music, Bad Bunny is also known for his bold fashion, outspoken activism, and pride in representing Puerto Rico and Latin culture on a global stage.
Bad Bunny has gotten the amazing opportunity to be the main performer at Super Bowl LX Halftime Show on Sunday, Feb. 8. This year, Bad Bunny has done many projects, making him more talked-about than ever. With this came the Super Bowl asking him to perform, and this announcement has sent the media into a stir. Many are excited, and many are also mad.
On September 28th, the NFL announced that Bad Bunny would be performing at the 2026 Super Bowl. Following the announcement, many people expressed anger and disappointment, mainly because Bad Bunny is a reggaeton artist, a genre some critics feel doesn’t fit the “traditional” Super Bowl style.
One reason for people being upset is language, culture, and representation. Bad Bunny primarily performs in Spanish, and is deeply rooted in Latin-music genres. Some people argue that a “mainstream American” event like the Super Bowl should feature an English-language, traditionally American performer.
More reasons include the political and social stances of Bad Bunny, as he has been outspoken on issues such as U.S. immigration policy. A right-wing organization, Turning Point USA, announced a rival “All-American Halftime Show” in protest of Bad Bunny’s selection.
While people are angered by Bad Bunny performing, it’s not really about his music. It’s about what he stands for and speaks out against. Many people focus on the political views of this event, rather than the fact that it’s supposed to bring people together in a way that is needed today.
