On November 11, 2025, the 15th annual LPS Poetry Slam took place at Options High School. All LPS students were invited and encouraged to participate or watch. This year, there were about 18 participants. A national poet, Jovan Mays, was the announcer for this event, and has hosted this event many times in the past. Our very own LHS students, Elise Analovitch and Caroline May, won second and first place, respectively.
Elise Analovitch is an early high schooler this year, and she won second place! The first poem she read was called “You Bring Us Down”, and it was a powerful poem about school. She’s so very passionate about writing poems, and it shows! The poem that won her second place was “For My Sister”, which was a poem about her sister who’s going off to college, and the amazing relationship she has with her. This poem definitely has so much emotion.
“I’m just honored that I got the opportunity to do the Poetry Slam in the first place. I was really excited I got second place!” says Analovitch.
Caroline May, a senior at LHS, won first place! She participated in the Poetry Slam her sophomore year and freshman year, and got second place both times. In her junior year, she signed up to participate, but sadly couldn’t go due to appendicitis. But that didn’t stop her from coming back and showing off her hard work!
“I was honestly really proud of getting first. I feel like I’ve been working to this point for a while, and I was just really happy to get there!” said May.
She definitely deserved first place with all her hard work. The first poem she read was “You Remember, but I Can’t Forget,” a poem about a car wreck due to a drunk driver. Her second poem was called “American Dream”, and this poem addressed the immigration issues in America, which was such a moving and strong piece.
If you love writing or poetry, keep your ears and eyes open for next year’s Poetry Slam, and give it a try!
“Any person interested in it should try it! It’s a really fun experience to do, even if you don’t think you have solid poems. I made a lot of friends from it!” said Analovitch.
Both these young ladies are so talented and deserve their wins. Congratulations to them!
