LHS Students Organize Walkout and ICE Protest

Last week, LHS students gathered near Broadway during A and B lunch to participate in a protest addressing ICE policies and their impact on students and families. This protest was organized with the support of Students Demand Action, after multiple students approached them asking for help to plan a walkout.

Senior Alex Herrera, one of the organizers and the public outreach officer for Students Demand Action, helped coordinate the event by contacting community organizations and also helped to gather supplies for poster making. “My role is reaching out to different places and saying, ‘This is what we’re doing, can you help us with supplies or coverage?’” said Herrera.

Despite having concerns about reaching out to multiple people, the protest exceeded expectations. A large number of people participated in the protest, with students from different grades and social groups. Herrera commented, “There were a lot of people I didn’t recognize or didn’t think would actually be out protesting. It was really nice to see students from all different groups show up.”

The goal for the people who participated was to create a platform for students’ voices to be heard. The organizer shared that recent events with ICE and new policies were the motivation behind the protest. “Students need a voice,” she said. “This is a topic that directly impacts so many of our students, and giving them a platform to speak out is really important.”

Overall, this protest brought students together while also being very successful and meaningful. It was a great way for students to have the opportunity for their voices to be heard.
