What makes a good class?

With all the registration going on, it has everyone (except seniors!) wondering what classes they should choose to enroll in, influencing our hopes and fears for next school year. In doing so, all this wondering about what aspects these classes might have make it harder to choose them. As a student, I know that we definitely want to be able to enjoy it overall, whether what we learn sticks with us or not.

To me, what makes a class good is the diversity of people and their opinions. It feels like sometimes you get put into classes where everyone thinks very similarly, but having different minds can make a class come to life in an unexpected way. Watching people connect through difference is especially intriguing. I’ve been in classes where students who would normally never interact with other students end up talking, collaborating, and even becoming friends with each other.

Our teachers are also crucial in making a good class. Having a teacher that is fully engaged with the students always makes the class more appealing to go to, and less awkward or uncomfortable. Being able to converse with your teacher, not only just about assignments, school, and homework, but also on a more friendship level, can always make a classroom enjoyable.

Being able to play around with everyone is cool and all, but also it’s good to be able to be heard. Sharing different opinions with each other also can introduce a new perspective to different people. When we share our different ideas, it also allows students to come up with different plans and suggestions, rather than the basic ones that are commonly thought of.

Overall, having more diversity, recognition, perspective, and collaboration is a better formula for having more effective classes, where all students and teachers contribute equally.
