Mock Trial goes to Boulder Battle Competition

In January, the LHS Mock Trial team competed in a series of trials centered around a case involving social media influence and responsibility. The case followed a girl who used a beauty product after watching an influencer’s video. The influencer demonstrated the product incorrectly according to the teenager, and the girl lost her sense of smell and sued the influencer for damages.

Throughout the competition, teams were required to argue both sides of the case. On the one side, attorneys represented the teenager suing the influencer, while on the defense side, they worked to protect the influencer from liability. Some participants switched roles, serving as both attorneys and witnesses, while others stayed in one role depending on their experience and comfort level. As a senior and a five-year Mock Trial member, Emma Roskelley served as the A-Team captain. Noah Huffman acted as an attorney on the plaintiff’s side and as a witness portraying the influencer on the defense.

“One of the most rewarding parts of the weekend was watching newer members, especially eighth graders and freshmen, participate in their first trials.” said Huffman. Despite being nervous, they performed confidently and showed impressive growth.

Both teams competed in four trials. The B-Team won two of its rounds, while the A-Team faced a tougher weekend due to absences and illness. Even so, the experience helped prepare everyone for Regionals in February, where the same case will still be used. The ultimate goal is to advance to the state competition in March, something the team is hoping to achieve again after a few years.
