Opinion: Our Prom announcements come too late

The LHS Prom theme and location were announced last week!  The theme is Garden of Glamour, and the location is the Chatfield Botanical Gardens.  And it was only announced… 3 weeks before Prom, which is what feels like several eternities after every other school announced theirs.  LHS has a tendency to tell their upperclassmen about Prom very late in the season, which leads to problems.  It’s well known that the student council chooses the theme and location months before it’s announced to the whole school, so why do we wait so long?  For some students it’s an annoyance that Prom details are announced so late, while for others it’s a bigger deal, specifically considering cost.

For most students, the theme is a suggestion more than a guide when they’re buying their outfits.  However, the venue does impact the sort of dress students choose.  Prom dresses might be purchased months before Prom, and many students want to get theirs as early as possible for hemming and other types of fitting.  However, without knowing the location, they can’t purchase the best possible outfit for the occasion.  A sundress with an open back won’t be optimal for a chill night outside, while warm and stylish boots won’t fit a nicer dance floor.  Still, for LHS students who only have the budget for a single outfit, they have to make that decision before they know where their Prom is going to be.

Prom is a day that every student thinks about for months before and years after. That means there is much planning that students have to do weeks before the event. When that time is reduced, students have added stress for what is meant to be a fun and easy dance.

The final issue is that there is another local high school with the exact same theme and location that was announced long before.  Obviously this isn’t a real issue, but the second announcement feels almost underwhelming. Unfortunately, it’s always LHS who seems to give their Prom details out second, meaning it’s the LHS students who feel lackluster towards their Prom.

In years to come, hopefully LHS will change their traditions of late announcements for Prom, to make the experience the best for students as it can be.
