Mock Trial has success at State Competition

Recently, the LHS Mock Trial team made their way to the State competition for the second time in school history. They placed 8th overall, out of the total 25 schools competing! We had a few winners, such as junior Andrew Orcutt placing 3rd for best witness, senior Aiden Ricenbaw placing 13th for best attorney, and freshman Olivia Millner-Calvo placing in the top 5 for respective witness. Here’s what the people there thought of the competition:

One person there was senior Emma Roskelly, who shared about her time at the event. “I thought that the competition went really well. Our team won 8th overall out of 25 schools, and personally, I was proud of my overall presentation,” said Roskelly. She also talked about the time and dedication that was put into perfecting the presentation to make it the best that it could be, saying, “Most of us ended up revising all of the work that we had done previously, and I really think it paid off!” This was Roskelly’s first time going to State and the team’s first time going as Regional Champions, making the experience even more special.

Mock Trial sponsor, Ms. Heather Bartlett-Mogg, also talked about the competition. She started by sharing about how the team had improved, saying, “The students adjusted a few roles based on scoring and feedback, to set themselves up to get the most amount of points possible. They changed up some of their questions and rewrote some of their stuff, and worked more on rules of evidence and objections and those kinds of things in order to really work.” The thing that stood out the most to her was the fact that they took on a school with a really good team at Regionals and beat them, and had to go head-to-head again with them at State, and won again. “We’re the only program around here that’s a student-run club and isn’t a class, so the fact that our kids can hang and really perform at a high level without that kind of stuff, I think is really impressive,” said Bartlett-Mogg about the club’s dedication and performance.

In the end, the team did wonderful, breaking their own records and learning along the way. We are excited to see what they achieve next season!
